In the whirlwind of jobs, assignments, and family commitments, it is easy to become neglectful of your personal needs. One of these needs is hobbies. Maintaining hobbies is one of the best ways to take care of your mental health as they reduce stress, encourage creativity, and provide a break from the usual routine. Still, many people lack hobbies that they actually enjoy. So, let’s walk through some ways to select the perfect hobby for you.

  1. Begin by considering a few prompts: 
  • Do you tend to prefer sedentary or active pastimes? 
  • What do you naturally tend to do in your free time and why?
  • Do you prefer to do things in groups or on your own? 
  1. Start to categorize your interests. You have full control of the grouping process, but some ideas are:
  • Physical activities
  • Creative activities
  • Intellectual activities
  • Social-cultural activities. 
  1. After you think that you have settled on a few solid interest areas, put them all to the side. Now consider: 
  • What is something you have always wanted to do, but never could? 
  • Do you currently have the capacity to do this? 

✅ If the answer is yes, then fully direct your attention to this.

❌ If the answer is no, then proceed to point four.

  1. This, I think, is one of the best ways to select the right hobby. Try an activity that produces something tangible

Whether it is writing, sewing, photography, or gardening you are creating active memories that you will be able to re-access by observing your creation. 

Joy is, by definition, intangible but by having a hobby in which you create, you can produce “tangible joy”. 

Remember that these are merely suggestions that you may choose to adopt or ignore. Still, I hope that you recognize the importance of hobbies to your wellness. Remember to take care of yourself and find things that genuinely bring you joy.
